Google adds Chromecast-specific app section to Play Store app

Google’s support for Chromecast is still fairly limited even as the promise of more apps continues to be on the horizon. Thankfully, the apps that do support Chromecast are some of the most notable and widely used across the web: YouTube, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus, and as of the last week, HBO Go.

The good news is that Google is set to release the official Chromecast SDK which will open the proverbial faucet for far larger integration of apps. Google’s promotion of Chromecast continues with the start of the holiday season and a new promotion:

“For a limited time we’re giving you an HD movie rental from Google Play with every purchase of a Chromecast device. It’s the perfect treat to add to that special someone’s stocking. At just $35 each, why not pick one up for both of you?” suggests Google Play’s site. The promotion is actually “valid for any movie rental or other content on Google Play valued at $6 or less”.

The real story however is the addition of the Chromecast button in the Google Play store app (landscape). The addition of the app specific button was first noticed by the unofficial Google Operating System blog and one of their eagle-eyed readers. The link itself only shows the sparse app selection but its placement on the app store shows just how much love Chromecast is receiving from the Google mothership these days.
