New HP 8, with iPad Mini (right)

HP’s new tablet – simply called the HP 8 – not only bears more than a passing resemblance to the non-Retina version of Apple’s iPad mini, it appears to use an almost identical 7.85-inch IPS 1024×768 display.

It looks like a reasonable if unexciting buy for the money, with an Allwinner quad-core ARM chip, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, a microSD slot (supporting up to 32GB cards) and running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) …

It’s the same price as the HP Slate 7 launched last April, and considerably cheaper than the Slate 8 Pro, which offers an  NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor and higher-res 1600×1200 display for $330.

HP re-entered the Android market last year after spending four years in the wilderness of WebOS.

  1. Notice the lack of lawsuits from Apple in the low cost tablet space. I believe Apple is willing to drive margins down so low that companies lose money and keep the high end secure for Apple.

  2. Ooooh! I’ll bet this low-cost tablet will really steal sales from Apple’s iPad. When will the competition onslaught ever end. This new HP tablet appears to be no more appealing that the many dozens of low-cost Android tablets already available for even less money.

  3. So Tu says:

This is the exact size I want next Nexus to be!
