Philips has just revealed some details of an upcoming 8000 series lineup of TVs for 2014, which will likely be the first lineup of Ultra HD TVs that hit the market running Android. Philips has three models running Android- Full-HD 8100 and 8200 Philips TVs and the Ultra HD 4K 8800 series— all of which come packed with Google Play store access and Google services like Chrome, YouTube, Google Play music and movies, and search.

The Philips 8000 series deliver superb picture quality. 800 Hz Perfect Motion Rate plus Super Resolution (8100, 8200) or 1000 Hz Perfect Motion Rate Ultra plus Ultra Resolution (8800) ensure superb motion sharpness. They also feature Local Contrast to further improve the screens’ splendid contrast and Micro Dimming Pro, a sensor-based technology that dynamically adapts the LED backlight depending on the ambient room light; this delivers impressive contrast through deep blacks and bright whites.

The 8100 and 8200 models run quad-core processors and come in 48 and 55-inch variants, while the 8800 4K model packs in a hexcore and comes in just a 55-inch model.  Philips said it has used processors powerful enough to let the full Android experience run smoothly, but you’ll have to put up with just 2.7GB worth of built-in storage for installing apps. The TVs will also offer a separate game controller for Play store content in addition to pointing, cursor navigation, typing, talking and gesture support.

The company isn’t providing any details on pricing yet, but said the first models of its 8000 series running Android will be available in at least Europe and Russia starting sometime in second quarter of this year.

When Google launched it’s new $35 Chromecast streaming stick last year, it made a point of confirming that its Google TV platform used by several partners wasn’t going anywhere. While we’ve yet to see many new Google TV announcements or products actually hit the market, a report in October of last year claimed that Google planned to rebrand its Google TV initiative to Android TV. It appears Philips has decided to use its own implementation of Android rather than make it a Google TV product (something companies often do). Rumors in recent months claimed that Google is also working on its own “Nexus TV” streaming product.
