Google’s browsers eclipse Microsoft to become the most popular in the U.S.

Over the past couple of years, Chrome has gained and fallen in terms of browser marketshare. Google’s browser briefly eclipsed Internet Explorer as the most popular browser in the world, but Microsoft quickly regained that crown. Now, Adobe has issued a report claiming that Chrome, on both mobile and the desktop, has finally eclipsed Internet Explorer as the world’s most popular browser.

Google’s Chrome and Android browsers held a 31.8% share in April, up from about 26% the prior year, according to the infographic from Adobe. Internet Explorer had 30.9% share in April, down from roughly 37% a year ago.

It’s important to point out, however, that Chrome on the desktop alone is not the most popular browser, at least not according to the Adobe. On the desktop alone, Internet Explorer is still number one with 41% of the market. Chrome is in second place with 31%. Chrome is also not the most popular on mobile, with Apple holding that title and 59% of the market.

But when paired together, Chrome on the desktop and on Android accounts for more of the market than Safari on iOS and the desktop and IE on Windows Phone and the desktop. This is because Windows Phone holds such a small percentage of the market and because Safari has low adoption rates on PCs.

Of course, we’ve seen various reports on Chrome’s marketshare over the years, but this one from Adobe seems to be the most reliable and has the most detailed information.
