Report: AT&T retail stores to be one of the first in U.S. to offer Google Glass (update)

If you can believe it, Google Glass was announced nearly two years ago at Google I/O 2012, becoming available to “Explorers” for the steep price of $1,500. The device didn’t actually ship until nearly a year later, in February 2013, but multiple beta versions of Glass have been in these select few hands since. As for a date when the device would finally go public, Sergey Brin recently said at the Code Conference that Glass would be released this year “plus or minus,” leaving the question as open-ended as ever.

Note: Yes, Google Glass is currently available to anyone in the U.S., but this is still just an extension of the Explorer program.

But now a report from the well-known evleaks Twitter account says that AT&T stores will be some of the very first retail locations to sell the device. For this leak to have happened, we can assume that there are indeed internal negotiations happening between Google and brick-and-mortar stores to get the device on the shelves — meaning that maybe, just maybe, Google is getting ever nearer to officially launching the device. Evleaks has a very reliable track record, but as with any rumor, it’s probably best not to plan your trip to the AT&T store just yet.

Update: The folks at Phandroid received a statement from a Google spokesperson shooting down this claim, saying “we have no plans to sell Glass in AT&T stores.” While most companies dodge rumors, Google addressing this directly makes us wonder if it’ll happen.
