Weather Channel announces major Android app update with redesigned interface, ‘Social Weather’

Back in April, The Weather Channel released an entirely redesigned app for the iPhone, and today, the company has finally started rolling out a similar update to Android devices. The update totally revamps the app’s interface. Previously, navigation within the app was based around tabs, but now all your information is contained within a single interface that allows you to scroll up and down to view more information.

A new “Social Weather” feature allows you to submit information about the weather in your area, in an effort to bolster the accuracy of the app. Also with the update, should your location be faced with severe weather, the entire app will redesign itself with a focus on staying safe in the storms.

The Android app also offers some exclusive features compared to its iOS counterpart, including the ability to view additional map layers and a 10-day forecast view that allows you to click to view a 36 hour forecast. The Android app also, of course, features several widget options.

The full change log for the update is below:

  • Find weather faster – A beautiful new design and simple interface makes the app easy to use. The radar map loads faster and is smoother than ever.
  • Discover deeper, more engaging content – With improved navigation, use the pull down list for your saved locations, or swipe up and down to view detailed forecasts and news. A vertical scroll unveils current conditions, hourly and 10-day forecasts, radar, video, news and more.
  • Get the info you need – Tap on the circle on the main screen for current details – “feels like” temperature, wind, dew point, humidity, visibility, pressure, UV index, and sunrise and sunset times.
  • Become your own weather forecaster – Introducing Social Weather on Android, the app lets you report and share your weather conditions or see what others in your area are saying, or take and share a photo of your current weather.
  • Help improve the forecast – With Social Weather reports, you can help find and improve the forecast for hard-to-predict spots. The Weather Channel includes data points from proprietary models, official government sources worldwide, Weather Underground’s network of 33,000 personal weather stations, and now crowd-sourced weather reports via mobile app.
  • Plan your day, no matter the season – Helpful tools give airport delays for travel, flu reports, pollen alerts and more.
  • Stay safe in severe weather – During extreme events, your entire app will change to tell you the full story.
  • Be alerted when it matters most – Get notifications for severe weather and high pollen counts. You can also activate an always-on temperature view.
  • Enjoy “Our Favorite Things” – See the best stories, social feeds and show clips from TheWeather Channel network such as AMHQ with Sam Champion.

The update is rolling out incredibly slowly via the Play Store now. The Weather Channel says that all users will not have the full update until mid-July. This is presumably to help squash the bugs before all users get their hands on it. Keep an eye on the Play Store for it to hit your device.
