Revealed: The new phones and waterproof tablet that Sony has up its sleeves for IFA 2014

As we’ve previously reported, Sony will be launching an Android Wear powered SmartWatch 3 and a new SmartBand Talk during IFA 2014 in Berlin. Don’t worry, that’s not all the Japanese company is announcing at the show. We’ve been informed by sources close to the matter that Sony will be launching three new smartphones and a thin waterproof tablet as well. Here’s what you can expect to see at IFA 2014…

Xperia Z3

As rumors have suggested, Sony will be launching the Xperia Z3 at its press event on Sept. 4, 2014. The device is said to feature very similar specifications when compared to its predecessor. Internally the Z3 will feature a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 and 3GB of RAM. It’s also packing a 5.2-inch triluminos display based on new technology that’s brighter and has a better contrast ratio. For the most part though, the specifications seem to be very similar to the Z2.

We’ve also heard that the Z3 will feature new software caching enhancements that will keep the device powered for up to 2 days on a single charge. As you would expect from this smartphone line, the Z3 will be IP68 certified. The most interesting fact here is that the Xperia Z3 will initially launch as a T-Mobile exclusive.

Xperia Z3 Compact

Sony will also be announcing the Z3 Compact. This device will feature the same internal specifications (processor and RAM) as the Z3, but will have a 4.7-inch (or 4.6-inch) 720 x 1,280 display. It will also feature the same battery enhancements and IP68 certification as the Z3.

Xperia E3

If you’re looking for a smartphone on a budget, Sony’s soon-to-be-announced Xperia E3 may the answer. The E3 will not feature any waterproof certification, but is said to have a 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5 to 2GB of RAM. It also has a 4.8-inch 720 x 1,280 display. The Xperia E3 will be Sony’s low-cost smartphone option and could retail between $200 and $300.

Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Finally, Sony will announce the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. This is claimed to be the thinnest and lightest waterproof tablet in the world at just 6.4mm thin. The Z3 Tablet Compact will also feature the same internal specifications (processor and RAM) as the Z3 smartphone, but have an 8-inch 1,080 x 1,920 display.
