Motorola announces updated Moto X and Moto G smartphones, Moto Hint Bluetooth headset

Motorola has just announced the newest additions to its smartphone lineup: the second-generation models of the Moto X and Moto G, and a Bluetooth headset called Hint.

First up is the new Moto X. It looks a lot like the previous model, but don’t be fooled: it’s got an entirely new spec list and even some tweaks to the design. The display is now 1080p versus the first-gen’s 720p version, and has gotten a slight size bump up to 5.2 inches. The edge of the phone is also now wrapped with aluminum rather than plastic. The camera has been bumped to 13 megapixels and now shoots 4k video (compared to a 10 MP still shooter with 1080p video support on the last model).

The Moto Maker online tool for customizing your phone has also been updated with new options, including custom colors for the volume rocker and power button. New back plate options include the previous wood design, as well as a line of all-new real leather options.

Under the hood is a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and intelligent new software that takes several photos and compares them all to automatically choose the best one (a decision which can, of course, be overriden by the user).

The second-generation Moto X can be yours later this month for just $99.99 on a contract.

The second phone announced today is the new Moto G, which features 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, a larger 5-inch 720p display (versus the previous 4.5 inch design), a 2 MP front-facing camera paired with an 8 MP rear camera, and a new microSD slot for storage expansions.

The new Moto G will be available at 11 AM central time for only $179. And yes, that’s the unlocked, no-contract price.

Motorola also debuted its new Moto Hint, a Bluetooth headset that looks more like an earbud than any “headset” you may be familiar with. When paired with a Moto X, the Hint acts as a sort of always-on virtual assistant, providing answers to questions you ask as well as notifications, and calling and texting options. It’s available in a variety of colors and materials, including Moto X-style wood and multiple colors of canvas.

The Hint also comes with a charging case that carries enough juice to recharge the device twice before needing to power up. The Moto Hint will be available later this year for $149.99.

One last Motorola gadget will be available later today: the much-hyped, Android Wear-powered Moto 360 smart watch. It retails for $249 and, like the Moto G, will go on sale at 11 AM central time.
