In a post on Google+, Motorola this evening announced that the long-awaited Lollipop update for the 2013 Moto X will begin testing this week in both the United States and Latin America. Motorola’s Senior Director of Software Product Management, David Schuster, made the announcement and noted that the after testing via TestDrive is concluded, the update will start full deployment. Schuster anticipates that the full rollout will commence in a “few weeks.”
In his post on Google+, Schuster acknowledged the concerns and frustration of 2013 Moto X users and blamed the significant delay on a “lack of support” from Motorola’s partners. It’s unclear who exactly Schuster meant in this jab, but nevertheless, it doesn’t appear to be all Motorola’s fault.
Schuster previously announced that the 2013 Moto X will jump straight to Android 5.1 Lollipop. At this point, however, it’s still unclear which variants of the 2013 Moto X will get the update first. We’d expect the unlocked versions to be updated first, though, with carrier models to follow, as that’s the common trend.

I know that a lot of people have been asking about the status of the Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop upgrade. I can see the frustration and in some cases the anger about how long it has taken to get the upgrade deployed. It has been a struggle due to the lack of support from some of our partners but I am glad to announce that we are starting TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well we should start full deployments in a few weeks.
