Google OnHub companion app hits the Play Store, boasts innovative setup and simple UI

To coincide with the launch of its brand new OnHub wireless router, Google has released the companion app on the Play Store. The app is notable for several reasons. Firstly, it reveals some of the setup details and secondly, the router management options look so ridiculously simple, they almost seem too good to be true.

What I found unbelievably cool is the audio paring. Unlike most routers that require you to input a long, complicated pass key, the OnHub transmits a unique audio tone which your smartphone detects and uses to connect to the router. Once logged in, you get access to simple, intuitive screens showing you anything you could need to know. It shows connection status, network speeds and even which devices are connected to the OnHub, with the added feature of being able to prioritize specific devices over others.

Here what you can expect to find in-app (as per the Play Store description):

• Set up your OnHub in just a few minutes
• Learn how to improve your Wi-Fi connection if there’s a slowdown
• Run a network check to test your connection speed
• Easily share your network name and password to friends & family
• Make changes to your settings, such as your network name or password
• Remotely provide or receive help from friends and family

If you’ve ordered the OnHub and are waiting for it to arrive, be sure to download the app on to your Android device. It’s available to download for free right now and is compatible with all Android smartphones running 4.0.3 or later.
