Flagship Meizu PRO 5 is official: All-metal design, octa-core Exynos 7240 chip, full HD display, more

Meizu has just taken the wraps off its latest flagship smartphone and — from the spec sheet alone — this could be one device worth paying attention to. Apart from the display resolution, everything about the device is high end. From the build quality to the camera and processor, the Meizu PRO 5 is a beast…

Meizu’s latest flagship has a stunning all-metal design, using a magnesium alloy for the vast majority of the device’s housing. It looks a little iPhone-esque from the front, but the rounded edges and the central position of the camera and LED flash help keep some individuality. The volume rocker and power key sit inside a shallow groove on the right edge of the device. What’s more, the bottom edge houses a USB Type-C connector which supports fast charging. Meizu claims it can go from 0-65 percent with just 30 mins plugged in. With a 3,050mAh battery inside, that charge rate is nothing short of impressive.

There are plenty of notable specs here. Perhaps chief of which is the processor being used inside the PRO 5. Meizu went with Samsung’s market-leading octa-core Exynos 7420, the same processor found inside the Galaxy Note 5. On the front, there’s a 1080 x 1920 resolution 5.7-inch display and a 5MP selfie camera. On the back, there’s a 21MP f/2.2 Sony camera sensor which can record 4K video.  Depending which model you choose, you’ll get either 3GB or 4GB of RAM alongside 32GB or 64GB internal storage. It also supports 4G LTE speeds of up to 300Mbps, and has VoLTE support.

At launch, the PRO 5 will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, and initially will ship without the company’s newly announced Flyme 5 user interface, which is due to launch on November 12th.

The Meizu PRO 5 will be available to buy on October 12th, with pricing set at approximately $439 and $486 for the 32GB and 64GB models respectively. There are no prizes for guessing color options: Meizu has chosen gray, silver white, silver black, gold and rose gold. Launch will be limited to Meizu’s home country of China initially. We’re yet to hear if the device will make it to western markets.
