‘Project Watch’ & ‘Gcam’ projects detailed on new Alphabet X site, Project Aura now official

X – The Moonshot Factory 2016-01-29 10-10-58

We told you a couple of weeks ago about how Google[x] recently got a new coat of paint (now under the Alphabet umbrella and simply known as “X”), and now that coat of paint has hit the web. The site has a brand new design, a new logo, and within you’ll find a rundown the group’s newly refocused mission. Additionally, the new Graduated Projects page seems to mention some projects we’re familiar with and some that we haven’t heard of previously…

The graduated projects we’re familiar with (and in some cases maybe too familiar with), include Google[x] Life Sciences, Glass, Project Insight, Google Brain, Flux, and Project Tango. There are a couple that I don’t recognize off the top of my head, though, including “Gcam” and “Project Watch”. The former planned to “improve mobile photography using techniques from computational photography,” and finally went on to be part of Google Research. The latter of course became Android Wear.

Interestingly, today also marks the first time that Google has officially acknowledged the existence of Project Aura (besides a few job listings using the name), which is the continuation of the project previously known as Glass. We’ve been reporting on Aura extensively, and recently showed you the group’s logo. This group is working on three devices at the moment: Glass Enterprise Edition, and two audio-focused devices to be mounted on the head.

Glass aimed to create the next mobile computing and communications platform: a head-mounted networked computer and display that is stylish and comfortable to wear. The project, now known as Aura, is a separate group within Google.
