Today in India Samsung has officially announced its latest smartphone, the Galaxy J2 (2016). This new device is pretty much your stereotypical mid-range Android device, but it stands out by giving us a sneak peek of what Samsung has in store for some of its upcoming devices.
First let’s get the specs out of the way. The Galaxy J2 (2016) packs a 5-inch SuperAMOLED display at 1280×720. Under the hood it’s powered by a Spreadtrum SC8830 quad-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM. You’ll also find 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot, Android Marshmallow, LTE, and a 2,600 mAh battery. On the outside you’ll also find an 8MP camera on the rear and a 5MP sensor up front.
All of that is perfectly acceptable, especially for the price, but what really has us interested is the Smart Glow notification ring on the back of the device. Recent reports have revealed what this new LED will do, but until now we haven’t seen it in action. In the video below (0:49) we get our first look at the functionality in use.
Just like reports stated, Smart Glow will be able to light up based on customized options, such as specific contacts, within the device’s software. Samsung’s press release for this device had the following to say about the feature:
While up to four alerts can be set, consumers can create and choose their own color for the Smart Glow. It also alerts a user if they are running low on battery, internal memory, or mobile data. Users can also use the Smart Glow LED ring to position the rear camera for higher mega-pixel selfies with the Selfie Assist feature.
Pricing for the J2 (2016) falls at Rs. 9,750 (about $145 USD) and the device will be available starting July 14th exclusively in India. While the phone itself is not all that impressive, we’re certainly glad to finally see Smart Glow in action and it only makes us more excited to see the feature make its way to more Samsung devices over the coming months.
