Eric Schmidt caught taking pictures with an iPhone, but is that really a big deal?

Eric Schmidt is in South Korea this week to witness Google’s AlphaGo AI system completely destroy the world Go champion at his own game. Sedol lost the first game yesterday, saying then that he was “very surprised”. Today he lost again. “It was a clear loss on my part,” he said. He had predicted before the matchups began that he would win the five-game series 5-0 or 4-1 “at worst.”

But while the Alphabet Executive Chairman is in South Korea to witness the monumental battle, the Korean press (OSEN, in this case) is clearly focusing on something else. As you can see in the pictures below, Schmidt was caught at a press event this week taking pictures with an iPhone…

Google has begun development of its new four-acre campus in Boulder, Colorado

Google has many satellite offices around the world that give it a diverse talent base that may not want, or may not be able, to move to Mountain View to work out of its headquarters. One of those satellite offices is located in the affluent town of Boulder, Colorado, which straddles the Rocky Mountains making it ideal for people who like outdoor activities including hiking and skiing. Earlier this week the company broke ground on a new 330,000 square foot campus to replace its current setup in the town of employees working out of what used to be a Circuit City (remember those?).

Crowd-sourced crime-reporting and safety app Tapshield goes public

tap

A crowd-sourced crime-reporting and safety app trialled on selected university campuses has now been rolled out to everyone. Tapshield allows real-time viewing of crime stats and suspicious activity in an area, and allows you to summon help when in trouble.

An award-winning mobile safety app and response dashboard, TapShield uses collaboration and crowd-sourcing to build safer communities & improve response times. Think of TapShield as your social safety network with you wherever you want to go.

The way the app works is that users can report crimes in progress and anything else they spot that concerns them, and those locations and incidents are then automatically shown to other Tapshield users in the area.

When a crime is reported, Tapshield sends a message to campus security when used within one of the participating colleges, and dials 911 when used elsewhere. You also have the option of sending a non-emergency alert to police when you see something that concerns you but which doesn’t justify an immediate emergency response – such as a bunch of street lights out, leaving a path in darkness.

If you have to make a journey that concerns you, you can specify your route and ETA and allow family and friends to follow your journey remotely, raising the alarm if you go off-route or don’t reach your destination when expected.

Finally, the app has a ‘yank’ mode, which automatically sends an alert if headphones are forcibly pulled from the device, such as when your phone is snatched by a thief.

Tapshield is a free download from Google Play.

In 2016, Google plans to open a brand-new one-million-square-foot office in London. We’ve already seen some images of the planned headquarters, but yesterday some fantastic new images were published that detail even more of what Google is planning to do with the massive campus.

The office will house a 20,000-square-foot bike shed, a public promenade, swimming pools, a rock-climbing wall, and more. There’s probably some work space in there, too, but details on that aren’t as plentiful. Quartz describes Google’s goal with the new office as an attempt to “make an office so you never want to leave.” It certainly sounds like Google is well on its way to accomplishing that goal.

You can find more images of the campus plans below.

Google signs deal to move 2,900 employees into new Silicon Valley Sunnyvale campus

Google has just signed a deal to lease a new Sunnyvale campus that, as Silicon Valley reports, will be the company’s “largest presence in Silicon Valley outside of Mountain View”.

The deal could see GOOG moving up to 2,900 employees for the long-term onto the new campus that totals 715,000 square feet at the Technology Corners complex at 11th Avenue and Innovation Way in Sunnyvale. This contributes to the over 1.9 million square feet of real estate the company has already committed to this year.

“As we continue to grow, it’s important to find space for our future employees close to our headquarters,” said David Radcliffe, vice president of real estate and workplace services for Google. “That’s why we’ve leased space at Moffett Park’s Technology Corners.”

Google has good reason to expand their presence in the Valley. The report notes Google plans on hiring more new employees this year than ever before with an additional 6,000 new members joining the team worldwide. Other companies, notably Apple, have been buying up land with big plans to accommodate their own growing employee base.
