PSA: 2nd Gen Moto G is now just $99 on Amazon

moto-g-2nd-gen

With the ramp up to Christmas well and truly underway, retailers will spend the next couple of weeks offering discounts on some great products. Even though Black Friday weekend has come and gone, there are still some noteworthy discounts out there. On Amazon, right now, you can pick up the 2nd generation Moto G for just $99, unlocked. That’s a discount of $80 on the original $179 price-point. Incidentally, that’s the same price it’s being sold for at Motorola and Best Buy currently.

As specs go, it’s a respectable smartphone, especially given the outlay. It has a 5-inch 720p display, 2070mAh battery, quad-core processor and runs an almost-stock version of Android. What’s more, Motorola has committed to bringing Android 6.0 Marshmallow to it at some point over the next few weeks.

At this price, I can’t imagine anyone will regret buying it. For the past few years, the Moto G has set the standard for other budget smartphones to follow. That’s why the most recent model, the 3rd gen Moto G, made it on to my list of 2015’s best budget smartphones.

Google Store discounts see $200 price cut on Nexus 9, $80 off Nexus 5X [Amazon too]

nexus-black-friday

Update: B&H also has the Nexus 5X at $80 off across the board.

Update: Looks like Amazon is upping the competition. The online retailer has price-matched the Google Store, and you can now pick up the 16GB Nexus 5X for $299 in black or white.  Sadly, the 32GB version is back-ordered, but the price is still listed at $349, the same as Google’s discounted price.

While you could pick up last year’s Nexus 6 64GB at a ridiculously low price ($260) on Amazon earlier today, Google’s official online store has some discounts of its own to offer for Black Friday. Perhaps most attractive is the $80 price cut on one of this year’s newest Nexus phones.

You can now buy the 32GB Nexus 5X for just $349 (down from $429), while the 16GB version is $299. At time of writing, all color options are in stock, but the discount only applies while inventory is there.  While it’s not the biggest discount we’ve ever seen, it’s still very generous given how new the Nexus 5X is. Google only announced the product last month, and it’s one of the only available phones to support Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

While stocks last, you can also snag the Nexus 9 at a discount. The tablet is down to just $199 for the 16GB version and $279 for the 32GB model, cutting the price down by a hefty $200. As things stand (at least until the Pixel C is available), the Nexus 9 is currently one of the only tablets available offering a pure Android experience. Multiple manufacturers have Android tablets on the market, but most come with a boat-load of bloatware. For $199 I’d argue you can’t get a better Android tablet if you value performance and software purity.

If you’re curious to see what other deals are out there today, be sure to bookmark 9to5Toys’ Black Friday page and 9to5Mac’s Black Friday Gameplan.

Google’s #PlaySale kicks off, brings huge discounts on apps, games, movies and more

BuevSOOIYAAQ7FT

Google yesterday kicked off what it’s calling the #PlaySale in 17 countries, and with it comes some fantastic deals across the marketplace. Tons of movies are going on sale to be available for less than $10, tons of apps are going free, and hit games are getting some steep discounts.

Be sure to check out Google’s discounted movies feature page, where you’ll find titles like Anchorman 2, Gravity, Son of God, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, all for less than $10. Likewise, Google is touting “up to 85% off and more!” on a huge selection of apps and games, where you’ll find everything from indie games to popular third-party apps. Also, as an added bonus, you’ll find that many apps are offering discounts on in-app purchases as well.

Google Checkout is checking out

Yet another Google service bites the dust.  This one’s not as cut and dry as Google Reader, for instance, because some of the Google Checkout functionality will transfer to Google Wallet.

Merchants can continue to accept payments using Google Checkout until November 20, 2013.

  • If you don’t have your own payment processing, you will need to transition to a different solution within six months. To make things easier, we’ve partnered with BraintreeShopify and Freshbooks to offer you discounted migration options.

  • If you are a U.S. merchant that does have payment processing, you can apply for Google Wallet Instant Buy, which offers a fast buying experience to Google Wallet shoppers.

At some point, Google’s brand is going to get tarnished by these closures. How am I going to feel comfortable getting behind a new Google product if I know there’s a more than 50% chance it will close?
