Google.org: US Geothermal Resources could produce 10 times the installed capacity of Coal

Funded by Google.org, SMU’s Geothermal Laboratory has found that the United States could produce three million megawatts of green power, or 10 times the amount of power that coal produces today. As you can see in the map above, SMU has outlined where in the United States these resources lay and are most dense on the West Coast.

New research from SMU’s Geothermal Laboratory, funded by a grant from Google.org, documents significant geothermal resources across the United States capable of producing more than three million megawatts of green power – 10 times the installed capacity of coal power plants today.

SMU used a geothermal layer on top of Google Maps to find their discoveries. SMU outlines the technical details and what impact it could have on the United States. Check out their post for all of the details.

Watch today’s Coldplay performance live on YouTube

Coldplay, a British alternative rock band which sold over 50 million albums, will be performing today at the American Express UNSTAGED event. YouTube and VEVO have joined forces to bring you a real-time stream of the performance, scheduled to begin at 1pm PT today. The official YouTube blog mentions that “this is the first time UNSTAGED series has streamed from an international venue, and fans from Argentina to Zimbabwe will be able to tune in and watch”.

If you’re a Coldplay fan, don’t forget to tune in at youtube.com/ColdplayVEVO. Coldplay was also one of favorite contemporary bands of Apple’s recently deceased co-founder Steve Jobs. No wonder the company invited them to perform for employees at the October 19 private memorial at Apple’s Cupertino, California corporate campus. That 20-minute performance can be seen embedded right below. Go past the fold for Coldplay’s “Shiver” music video.

Galaxy Nexus gets November 16 launch date from UK retailer

It looks like the Galaxy Nexus will be landing in the hands of UK customers first, as online retailer Phones4U has just posted a November 16th delivery date through carrier Orange. Google and Samsung haven’t made anything official on pricing and a solid release window, but a mid-November launch would certainly make sense leading up to the holidays.

In related news, Google has apparently confirmed that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which was launched alongside the Galaxy Nexus, will not be making its way to the original Nexus One. The Telegraph reports Google’s Hugo Barra has confirmed the device’s hardware is “simply too old” to run the new OS.
