HTC One M9 review roundup: too similar to its predecessor to stand out against strong competition

Site default logo image

HTC revealed its 2015 smartphone flagship, the One M9, at Mobile World Congress earlier this month. The device was met with a seemingly ‘meh’ reaction at the time, with HTC fans complaining that the device was too similar to its predecessor and worrying about the use of the over-heating Snapdragon 810. This evening, reviews for the HTC One M9 have officially started popping up around the web and they give us a much more in-depth look at what the company has to offer as we head into 2015…

Don’t worry if you break your new HTC One M9 or want to switch carriers – HTC has you covered

If you’ve ever said “Uh-oh” as your smartphone fell to the ground, HTC knows how you feel. It is today announcing a free, one-year protection plan for the One M9 smartphone, offering a free replacement if you crack the screen or drop it in water. The company will also replace the phone if you want to switch carriers.

HTC UH OH Protection provides consumers who damage their new HTC One M9 with an untimely fall onto the pavement or into a toilet with a free phone replacement within 12 months of purchase. Consumers who don’t take advantage of UH OH Protection within the first 12 months will receive $100 towards the purchase of a future HTC One.

The UH-OH program is an extension of the HTC Advantage cover offered on the M8, which was limited to screen damage and only lasted for six months …

This is why the HTC One M9 is called the HTC One M9

HTC One M9_Silver_Back

Jeff Gordon is probably one of the most vocal HTC higher-ups on Twitter, being the source of many a tease about the company’s continual smartphone endeavors. He’s also very often the first to tell the world about software releases and other important HTC-related updates. Today he was especially engaging, coming out to talk a bit about the company’s flagship smartphone line, but specifically on the origin of the HTC One Mx naming scheme…

Poll: Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 compared – which is your pick?

htc-one-m9-silver-back-1

Both the Samsung Galaxy S6 (and the S6 Edge) and the HTC One M9 were announced yesterday, showcasing the best that these two Android OEMs have to offer this year. Both of these devices were horribly-kept secrets in their own ways, so there weren’t many surprises yesterday—we already knew almost every detail about both phones before they were announced.

But now that they’re here, which one do you think you’ll be getting? Or if you’re not in line for an upgrade right now, which one would be your pick? Let’s take a look at a few of their differences…

HTC One M9 announced in 4 colors, 20MP sapphire camera, more – available this month

Site default logo image

HTC-ONE-M9

One of the worst-kept tech secrets in recent memory, the HTC One M9 was finally announced today on stage by CEO Peter Chou at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. None of the specs were much of a surprise though the 20 megapixel sapphire camera and new configurable DotView cover will make some headlines. Under the hood is Qualcom’s new flagship 810 processor which HTC calls the fastest mobile processor in the world.

As for the appearance, I’m not sure I’m a fan of the Dual-Tone finish tweeted below but that beats the Pink version of the M9 IMHO.

HTC One M9 Hands on (Before MWC 2015) - YouTube 2015-02-28 10-40-59

The HTC One M9 is almost surely going to be one of the biggest stars of the Mobile World Congress this year, but it has also arguably been one of the most-leaked handsets ever. As HTC’s event approaches, the leaks have seemed to become only more and more prevalent, and that trend is continuing today as a hands-on video of the device has appeared on YouTube…

HTC teases ‘bigger boom’ for upcoming HTC One M9

HTC Ireland on Twitter: %22Get your hands on bigger boom #ComingSoon #6days #MWC15 https:::t.co:UTpE5tAY4E%22 2015-02-23 10-24-31

The teases keep rolling in as HTC, Samsung, and others compete for the spotlight this week going into the Mobile World Congress. We’ve already seen several HTC One M9 leaks from @upleaks, including the device’s purported specs and another today that revealed the device’s three color variations. Now the HTC Ireland Twitter account has come out with a video that looks to be teasing the device’s speakers.

Not long ago a system dump of the device revealed the apps that will be packed with HTC’s Sense 7, making it clear that software-wise, the next HTC One isn’t going to be much of a departure from its predecessor. The below tease tells us that we’re six days away from the announcement of the device, but a recent tweet from the Taiwanese company’s UK Twitter account originally revealed that the “new HTC One” will be announced March 1st.

The next HTC One is right around the corner, but more and more details continue to stream out as the device’s March 1st reveal date gets closer. Most recently, a system dump of the software shipping on the HTC One M9—codenamed “Hima”—leaked out, giving us an idea of what HTC’s Sense 7 software is going to look like (spoiler: not much different than Sense 6). Today, the same source of that information has come out to share the color variants of the device.

HTC takes to Twitter to tease the ‘new HTC One’

We have a full-on teaser war happening right now. HTC has revved up their Twitter engines and started to post about a device they’re calling the “new HTC One,” slated for announcement on March 1st, 2015 in Barcelona, Spain. No mention of the “M9” moniker that the device is widely assumed to have (and was spotted on none other than HTC’s website), but we’ll have to wait and see what happens…

[tweet https://twitter.com/HTC_UK/status/567783134180040704 align=’center’]

The most reliable leaks we’ve seen thus far claim to show the “Hima” M9 device in two variants. Details are currently sparse in terms of specifications, but at least one of these bad boys should have a 5.5-inch display, the Snapdragon 810 SoC is widely expected to power them, and 3 GB of RAM seems to be the norm for this refresh cycle. Upleaks, which has a decent track record, spilled some “Hima” specs in December.

Android Lollipop finally landing on AT&T LG G3, T-Mobile HTC One (M8) (Update: US Cellular Moto X (2014) too!)

Lollipop Forest

Update: It appears that Android Lollipop is also hitting the US Cellular Moto X (2014) today as well.

According to various reports from Android users around the internet today, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally making its way to some of the most important 2014 flagships on some carriers. Specifically, today marks the day the update seems to be landing on the AT&T LG G3 and T-Mobile has confirmed that the update is also today hitting its HTC One (M8).

Software versions & updates: HTC One (M8) | T-Mobile Support 2015-02-10 12-52-27

The update has been very slowly rolling out over the course of the last few months, starting off in December with Google’s own Nexus devices. Most recently, the update started rolling out to the Sprint Galaxy S5, that same device on Verizon, and Google’s own cellular models of the Nexus 7.

It looks like the update is going to clock in somewhere in the realm of 400 to 600 MB in download size, depending on which device and carrier you’re using. Be sure to let us know if you have an AT&T LG G3 or a T-Mobile HTC One (M8) and you’re seeing the update.

HTC says that Android 5.0 Lollipop is now rolling out to HTC One (M8) in Europe

HTC One M8 GPE

HTC’s Jeff Gordon, the company’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, has taken to Twitter this morning to say that owners of the HTC One (M8) in Europe should be expecting to see Android Lollipop at some point very soon.

https://twitter.com/urbanstrata/status/560385225747091456

Users have been reporting back that the update hasn’t seemed to hit their devices yet, but Gordon says to keep checking as the update will be rolling out in waves.

This news comes a bit more than a month after the update starting rolling out to both the One M8 and M7 Google Play Edition devices.

New render leak via evleaks shows upcoming ‘Hima’ HTC One (M9) flagship in two variants

B8cIdk3CYAEzATg-1.png 2015-01-28 09-14-25

A new image, courtesy of none other than Evan Blass (@evleaks) himself, has leaked this morning showing what looks to be two variants of the upcoming “Hima” HTC One (M9) flagship. While they sport a similar physical build, the larger one includes a hardware home button while the smaller of the two does not. Interestingly, this render is a bit different than anything we’ve seen leaked thus far, straying just a bit in design from the current generation hardware…

Purported photos of upcoming ‘Hima’ HTC One ‘M9’ handset leak out

upload-1

Following yesterday’s report from Bloomberg that HTC is indeed launching its next flagship smartphone in March, new photos have leaked today showing a handset that doesn’t look all too different from what the Taiwanese company currently offers. There’s not too much new information to be learned from these photos (via Nowhereelse.fr), and you should probably take them with a heaping pile of salt, but there’s always a chance that this could be a quick peek the next HTC flagship in the flesh.

HTC’s next flagship preparing for launch on March 1 at Mobile World Congress

HTC-STD-MWC-2015

Rumors have been swirling for a long time about what HTC might have planned for us this year, and while the Taiwanese company isn’t telling us just yet, they’re at least giving us some kind of idea of when exactly they’ll be making some big announcements. To no one’s surprise, HTC is today sending out invites for a press event being held at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this upcoming March.

Consider that countdown started. HTC this afternoon tweeted that it has received the source code for Lollipop and will be releasing the update three months from today as expected.

Sprint HTC One (M8) receiving Android 4.4.3 update with WiFi calling support, more

HTC-One-m8

Sprint this morning announced that it has started rolling out an update to Android 4.4.3 for its HTC One (M8) variant. The update today carries the build number 2.16.651 and packs a variety of enhancements and changes. The biggest change, however, is the addition of WiFi calling for customers. Sprint has been gradually rolling this feature out to new devices since the beginning of this year, so it’s certainly nice to see it finally hit the One (M8).

HTC One M8 and mid-range phones put the company back in the black after a string of losses

Site default logo image

htc

HTC, which started losing money last October, has kept its promise to return to the black in Q2 this year according to unaudited figures revealed in a brief statement.

Unaudited quarterly revenue was NT$65.06 billion and net profit before tax was NT$2.76 billion. Operating profit was NT$2.43 billion, and net profit after tax was NT$2.26 billion

The company said in February that it planned to follow Samsung’s lead in making handsets across all price-points, stating that it had “missed a huge chunk of the mid-tier market.” Revealing further losses in April, the company said that it expected to return to profit in Q2 thanks to both new mid-range phones like the Desire 816 and its well-regarded flagship One M8 …

Google Play Edition Galaxy S5 still exists, shows up again in leaked image

Site default logo image

sgs5gpe

The Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition has been the subject of a lot of leaks lately, between it passing through Bluetooth certification, briefly appearing on the Play Store, and appearing on a Play Store support page. Now, notorious Twitter leaker @evleaks has posted a render of the device, seemingly confirming its existence, yet again. The Google Play Edition S5 looks identical to its TouchWiz counterpart, aside of course, from the software.

The Google Play Edition HTC One M8 is already available on the Play Store, so it seems a bit odd that it is taking Samsung and Google so long to release its Play Edition device for the year, but with this render coupled with all of the other leaks, the device still seems to exist and is presumably coming sooner rather than later.
