If there is one thing we learned from CEO Satya Nadella’s corporate restructuring of Microsoft over the last couple of years, it’s that he wants its services to be everywhere. And that doesn’t just mean apps like those in Office 365‘s suite keeping your productivity up even on non-Windows systems, but something that aims at a much deeper integration.
With today’s update rolling out for iOS and Android, the Outlook app is adding what the company calls “Calendar Apps”. While you could already see your calendar from within the dedicated tab inside the app, the new addition — which likely comes from the Sunrise acquisition — will allow services like Evernote, Facebook and Wunderlist to integrate as well…
Gmail update fixes Hotmail sync issue, but not missing notifications on Nexus devices yet
Earlier this week, Gmail for Android version 5.10 shipped with a fix for a sync issue involving Hotmail accounts. However, Google is still working on a bug that prevents Nexus devices in particular from getting notified about incoming Gmail messages.
Outlook 2.0.0 for Android APK is available to download, here’s what it looks like
Not long ago, Microsoft announced it would be bringing an updated look to its Outlook app for Android, killing Sunrise in the process. While iPhone users got the updated redesign almost immediately, Android users had to wait a little. Today, Outlook 2.0.0 is finally available to download with some refreshed user interface design and a couple of new features. You can download the app directly from APK Mirror, or wait for it to hit the Play Store officially (it shouldn’t be too long until the update hits).
Yahoo releases redesigned Mail app for Android w/ Outlook, Hotmail, AOL Mail integration
Yahoo is rolling out an update to its Mail app for Android that introduces a refreshed design, as well as new features including smarter search, contacts management and rich compose. Alongside the updated app, Yahoo Mail is for the first time introducing account integration for third-party email services including Outlook.com, Hotmail, and AOL Mail.

Microsoft launches preview of revamped Outlook mail app based on Acompli for Android (Video)
Microsoft announced today a new app for its Outlook email service on Android. The app [Google Play, Free] is based on the Acompli software that the company purchased in December for $200 million. The app includes “email triage” features found in the old app as well as new features to help appeal to a wider audience, such as the ability to toggle threaded conversation views.
The Outlook Android app will also support mail from third-party services beyond Microsoft’s. Gmail, iCloud, and Yahoo email accounts can be plugged into the app, and attachments can be added to messages from cloud services like Google Drive and Dropox. Check out the video below …
Microsoft buys Acompli, an email app for Android
Microsoft announced today that it acquired Acompli, an email client for Android and iOS, in an effort to own more productivity apps on each mobile platform:
This acquisition is part of our company-wide effort to help people accomplish more with their mobile devices. This year we brought Office to the iPad and the iPhone, and we recently announced that we’re bringing Office to Android devices. These are significant steps in our work to deliver the best productivity experiences across mobile platforms, and we’re continuing to push forward.

Soon after launch we started working with a number of enterprise IT departments who believed, like we do, that great products need to be “Loved by Users, and Trusted by IT.” Right around this time we began conversations with the folks at Microsoft about how we could go farther by integrating the capabilities of their Office 365 platform into our product while continuing to provide amazing support for email and file services from Apple, Dropbox, Google, and Box. Those conversations led to today, where we have decided the opportunity to join forces in pursuit of a better, faster, more powerful email experience is something we can do better as one company.
The acquisition follows Microsoft’s announcement last month that Android tablet users can sign-up to preview the upcoming version of Office. Microsoft also integrated Office support with Dropbox as part of a new partnership between the two companies.
According to Re/code, Microsoft spent more than $200 million to buy up the email app although neither company disclosed that amount.

Outlook adds support for Google Talk in appeal to Gmail users
Microsoft is rolling out Google Talk integration to its online email service Outlook, which is something that could tempt Gmail users try out the less popular competing service.
Microsoft, which owns its own chat service by way of its Skype purchase, is using Google’s public API to include Google Talk integration on Outlook.com. The timing is interesting as we expect Google to announce its new messaging service at Google I/O this week.

Microsoft’s Outlook.com app lands on Google Play
Android users now have access to another mail app—but this one is by Microsoft.
According to The Verge, Microsoft just launched the official Outlook.com app on Google Play with a bevy of Gmail-like features, such as: push notifications, syncing options, custom folders and sub-folders, and the ability to send, receive, and view photos and other attachments. The app also boasts Exchange ActiveSync support and the option to use with multiple Outlook.com accounts.

While the free app may serve as a Gmail alternative, it certainly does not do the eyes any justice. Just check out that archaic user-interface in the screenshots above. Outlook.com for Android currently has a 3.3-star rating based on 35 reviews.
