Samsung hits the ground running with three million Galaxy S II pre-orders

According to many, Samsung Galaxy S II is the best mainstream Android phone currently available on the market. It appears the company has a hit on their hands as Electronista reports they sold an astounding three million pre-orders around the world as of Sunday night. The figure puts Samsung on track to beat its own goal of ten million Galaxy S II units in 2011. The dual-core phone sold about 120,000 units in the first few days of availability in South Korea. The Galaxy S II features a monstrous 4.3-inch display with the latest Super AMOLED Plus display technology.

The South Korean manufacturer of the Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab tablet reported first quarter operating profit of 2.9 trillion (about $2.9 billion) won on the revenues of approximately 37 trillion won. The operating profit is in a steep decline compared to 4.41 trillion won from the year-ago quarter. Samsung was the second-largest cellphone maker during the first three months of 2011, behind market-leading Nokia. In smartphones, however, Samsung placed fourth based on quarterly shipments of 10.8 million units, with Nokia, Apple and Research In Motion taking up the first three slots with an IDC-estimated shipments of 24.2 million, 18.7 million and 13.9 million smartphones.

Apple last month sued Samsung over the Galaxy-branded smartphone and tablet series. The iPhone maker alleged intellectual property infringement and Samsung fired back and counter-sued Apple in the US for violating ten smartphone patents. Apple is also the largest Samsung customer. The Galaxy maker supplies memory chips and mobile display technology to Apple and manufactures the A4/A5 processors for iOS devices.
