Amazon’s rumored “Firetube,” a set-top box designed to compete with Google’s Chromecast and the Apple TV, may be delayed beyond the holiday season, according to a report by the Verge. The device was originally supposed to debut this fall, but was later pushed back until the holiday season. Unforeseen delays have once again caused Amazon to re-evaluate that launch date.

The box will reportedly run a variation of Amazon’s Fire OS, the software that powers the Kindle Fire. Fire OS itself is a fork of Android, allowing it to support third-party applications. This capability will be carried over the Firetube, allowing buyers to run a variety of software and games directly on their televisions. The box will also support streaming content thorough Amazon Prime.

There’s no word on when Amazon plans to finally reveal the Firetube to the public.
