Developers grab the Nexus 5 camera by the horn, improve it with software

I’ve already written about my disappointment in the Nexus 5 camera and that’s exactly why this news out of XDA Developers is grabbing my interest. A developer by the name of Jishnu Sir created a flashable .zip file that is said to greatly improve the quality of the camera. Any flashable file requires an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery but beyond those extras, the “new” camera app will add or improve:

  1. Sound Recording now in Stereo with the secondary Mic.
  2. Faster Focusing for the camera.
  3. Front Camera also records 720P Videos@ 20 Mb/s.
  4. Front camera Audio Bitrate@ 192000 Kb/s.
  5. AntiBanding default set to 50Hz
  6. Focus Range Adjusted.
  7. Enhanced Smooth Zoom.
  8. Turned Edge Enhancement ON.

The entire XDA thread will help you debate just how necessary or unnecessary some of these additions or improvements are or how some photographers prefer to adjust these features in post-work. However, I’m all about the community grabbing the proverbial bull by the horns and working to make a device better than it already is.
