Amazon, just days after announcing its FireTV set-top box, has now announced a new home accessory dubbed the “Dash.” The Dash is a wand-sized device that has built in Wi-Fi, a barcode scanner and a microphone. The goal of Dash, according to Amazon, is to make shopping and remembering things you need even easier.
Simply hold down the microphone button and say the name of an item, like “orange juice”, and Dash will automatically add it to your shopping list. You can also scan the barcode of any item with the built in LED scanner to add items to your shopping list.
Amazon Dash works by connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and communicating directly with your Amazon and/or AmazonFresh account. Any item you scan or talk about will automatically be added to your shopping cart and when your done, you can log onto the Amazon via a desktop or mobile device, edit your cart, and checkout.
Items you purchase should arrive the next day, presuming that you live in Southern California, San Francisco, or Seattle. It’s important to point out that Amazon is only making Dash available to select AmazonFresh customers who are subscribed to Prime Fresh. If you are one of the Fresh customers chosen, the Dash wand itself is free, but AmazonFresh is of course $299 a year after the initial one-month trial.
