Google’s head of design for ATAP group leaving Mountain View for new gig at Capital One

Dan Makoski

Dan Makoski, Google’s head of design for its Advanced Technology & Projects division is leaving the company and taking a design related position at Capital One. Yep, the bank that has star-studded credit card ads powered by celebrities like Alec Baldwin and Samuel L. Jackson. So why leave a bleeding edge tech company like Google for life at a financial institution? Makoski recently drafted a list on his blog explaining his decision.

  1. there are few spaces as ripe for technology and human-inspired re-imagination as how people relate to their money,
  2. Capital One has been steadily building a quiet but extraordinary design thinking, strategy and execution culture on top of its already legendary data analytics capability,
  3. and when you stir the above and throw in the spark of vision & leadership:

*boom.

In his time with Google, Makoski led the research and design on the Moto X and was heading the work being done with Project Ara. It’s unknown who will take over his duties related to the development of Mountain View’s modular smartphone or any other projects he was linked to. We’ve reached out to Google for comment and will update this news article with any new information.
