HTC not releasing a smartwatch until next year

HTC is hosting a media event tomorrow in New York and while we’re pretty sure it’s related to cameras, we’re now positive that it won’t have anything to do with the company’s rumored smartwatch. The outfit has decided to put its wearable plans on ice and target a launch for next year instead of rushing an unprepared device to market.

“We had originally planned to have a wearable launch in this time frame,” HTC Americas head Jason Mackenzie recently told Re/code. “It ended up just not being ready.”

Likely comfortable with its decision, the company took a look at the current group of smartwatches available to consumers and didn’t see anything that felt like a must have.

“We’ve seen a lot of general purpose wearables come to market,”Drew Bamford, VP of HTC Creative Labs told Re/code. “There’s not a strong reason to wear one every day. When we come to market with our product we want to make sure the product has a strong point of view and there is a really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist.”

HTC may not be releasing a new smartwatch this year, but the company is reportedly working on Google’s next Nexus tablet and a new active sports camera expected to be announced during tomorrow’s shindig.
