New evidence surfaces that L could stand for ‘Lollipop’

Licorice, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lollipop, Laffy Taffy? What’s it going to be? We still don’t know for sure, but following recent rumors based on comments made by the designer of the Google sculptures that the upcoming release would be called “Licorice,” we now have compelling new evidence from a Chromium issue tracker that Google is actually going to go with “Lollipop” after all (via myce).

As you can see in the image above, which comes from this Chromium issue tracker, there’s a cute little Android L debug icon resembling a lollipop. We saw previously that there were references in Android L code to something seemingly called “LMP,” which was assumed to stand for Lemon Meringue Pie. But Google having a bit of fun and using two different names isn’t new, with last year’s release being called “Key Lime Pie” internally until Google’s partnership with KitKat was revealed.

Could something similar be happening here? We’ll find out at some point later this month when Google finally releases Android L as well as its new lineup of Nexus devices.
