Android 5.1 purportedly leaked at annual Devoxx conference in Belgium

While the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop is only now beginning to roll out to Google’s own Nexus devices, it seems that Android 5.1 could already be in the works. Dutch site AndroidWorld has reported today that Google software engineers Romain Guy and Chet Haase were spotted using a Nexus 5 running Android Lollipop MR1 at the annual Devoxx conference in Belgium.

The only evidence we have right now (besides common sense) of Android 5.1’s existence is the grainy screenshot pictured above, but based on the release cycle of Android in the past, it is very likely that the software update is in the works internally. Android 2.0 MR1 later became Android 2.1, Android 3.0 MR1 went on to become Android 3.1, Android 4.0 MR1 became Android 4.1, and there’s no reason to believe that the pattern will change with 5.0

However, this isn’t really anything to get too excited about. While Android 5.0 Lollipop was a substantial release and made drastic improvements across the entire OS, Android 5.1 will likely not be nearly as significant. If what we know about previous Android releases holds true, this version of Android will focus mostly on making sure this week’s release is cleaned up and bugs are taken care of.

If you want to get your hands on Android 5.0 Lollipop, be sure to check out the factory images for the Nexus 5, 7, and 10. Additionally, Motorola has already begun rolling the update out to most Moto X and Moto G devices. If you have a relatively modern device that isn’t a Nexus or from Motorola, though, keep your eyes peeled for an OTA update landing over the coming months.
