First official build of Android 5.0 Lollipop now available for the OnePlus One

OnePlus has today rang in 2015 with an exciting surprise for owners of its One flagship smartphone. An early alpha build of the company’s official Lollipop ROM—with no mention of Cyanogen to be seen—has been released to the public, and you can download it right now.

The ROM is just the “first step” the company says, in what will eventually be its own custom version of Lollipop. It’s early in that process, though, so today’s release is very close to simply being a stock AOSP ROM with no additional features or tweaks (which might make it even more enticing for some of the Nexus-loving purists out there).

Over the next several months, the company plans to build in some of its own improvements and features. Specifically, OnePlus says that it plans to make the Android experience customizable while also making sure to keep the core functionality of stock Android as reliable as ever.

As you might expect, OnePlus suggests that you approach this ROM with caution, as it is an alpha release.

Now, it’s our turn. It’s time we show you just a little bit of what we’ve been working on. This is the first step in what will become our own custom ROM. It’s so early, in fact, that this build contains no extras beyond the stock features of AOSP Lollipop. It’s the base that we will continue to build upon, improve, and customize as we stabilize core functionalities on the latest firmware updates.

As we look towards the official ROM release in the near future, we will keep to our promise and deliver an experience that is customizable, yet bloat-free with stock-Android-like simplicity by default; we wouldn’t ask you to settle for anything less. In the meantime, we thought you’d appreciate an early community preview and a progress report.
