Google silently stops selling Play Edition HTC One (M8), the last remaining GPE device

Google has been killing of Google Play Edition devices left and right over the past year and today, the final one has been given the axe. As noticeable on the homepage of the Play Store, the Google Play Edition HTC One M8 is no longer available for purchase. The device was listed at $699 and released last year.

Google initially flooded the Play Edition market with devices from HTC, Motorola, Samsung and Sony, but ever since then, it’s been all downhill. Google killed the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and HTC One M7 last July. The company followed that move up by axing the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition a month later. Despite several rumors claiming otherwise, Google and Samsung never even released a Play Edition Galaxy S5.

Seeing that there are currently no Google Play Edition devices available for purchase, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not we’ll ever see another device with the GPE branding. For the time being, anyone who wants a stock Android device should look into the Nexus lineup instead. Hopefully Google will give us an update on the future of Play Edition devices sooner rather than later.
