Android One Indonesia

Android One, Google’s program focused on bringing high quality smartphones to developing markets at affordable price points, is expanding to Indonesia later this month, the company announced today. Indonesia will become the fifth country in which Google has rolled out the Android One program since the initiative was first introduced at Google I/O last year. Google says smartphones through the Android One program in Indonesia will become available both online and through offline channels with launch partners including Evercoss, Mito and Nexian to deliver affordable, high quality smartphones for under 1.5 million rupiah.

These include handsets sporting 4.5-inch FWVGA displays with Cortex A7 1.3GHz quad-core processors and 1GB of RAM under the hood alongside 8GB of internal storage and 1700mAh batteries. Camera wise, these Android One handsets include 5MP back shooters and 2MP front facing cameras.

The company says it’s also “working to reduce data costs for people in Indonesia” to compliment to Android One effort.

In conjunction with the launch, mobile service provider Telkomsel is offering to reduce data costs for those who buy Android One phones with a promotion that provides free over-the-air (OTA) updates and 200MB per month worth of app downloads from Google Play for the first six months.

As for those free over-the-air software updates, Android One smartphones are promised “the latest version of Android, automatically updating to the new version of Android soon after it is released (for up to two years).”

Android One first launched in India with Google later targeting the population of more than 200 million people across Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka last year.
