HTC says next ‘maintenance release’ of Android coming in March

HTC’s Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi has revealed in a tweet that Google will post the next maintenance release of Android in March of this year. The tweet from Versi was in response to a user inquiring about an issue centering around the capacitive button backlights on the Google Play Edition HTC One M7.

Details about what Versi means by maintenance release are sparse at this point, although it’s expected to be the full public release of Android 5.1. Google earlier this month unveiled Android 5.1, but only for Android One devices in select foreign nations. Earlier this week, however, we did see a Nexus 5 powered by Android 5.1 appear in Geekbench results.

Most likely, Google will post the next maintenance release of Android to the Android Open Source Project in March, with manufacturers then working to update all of their devices. The maintenance release will almost certainly focus mainly on bug fixes and performance improvements, with Google saving most of its new features for the next major version of the operating system expected to be unveiled this summer.

Also on Twitter, Mo Versi continued to address the update statuses of Android 5.0 Lollipop for its HTC One M7 T-Mobile variant, saying that the end of this month is the company’s target date.
