OnePlus 2 will reportedly look more premium, might have a higher price

The next device from OnePlus, which most assume will be called the OnePlus 2, is probably right around the corner—after all, the current-generation OnePlus One was announced over nine months ago. But what kind of changes does OnePlus have planned for it?

According to a report this morning from Business Insider, the phone is going to look and feel a lot more “premium” than its predecessor, potentially sporting a metal frame. It’s said that this might come with a price bump, however, so lets hope that’s something you’re willing to settle for.

OnePlus has already itself confirmed that the OnePlus 2 is in the works for a 2015 launch, so there’s no question that there will indeed be a successor to the infamous dirt-cheap but super-spec smartphone. In an AMA on Reddit, OnePlus’ Carl Pei said that the company is targeting a release during Q2 or Q3 in 2015. There’s no telling what the word “release” means when it comes to OnePlus, however, so we could see an announcement sooner than we think alongside another dreadfully long rollout. Let’s hope not.

There haven’t really been that many specific details leak out about the device, but it seems we’re starting to get a better idea of the direction OnePlus plans to take. Earlier this year, another Business Insider report outlined a few changes that would likely be coming to the device, according to sources familiar with the matter. The new device will reportedly be more customizable than the first version, ship with “surprises” when it comes to its hardware (more premium?), and will of course still be cheaper than other flagships.

Carl Pei also last year touched on the fact that the company is pandering with the idea of a smaller form factor, but wouldn’t offer any details. Alongside a slightly more expensive OnePlus 2, it would be a theoretical possibility that OnePlus might introduce a variant of the device with a smaller form factor to still offer a phone in the original device’s $300 price range. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
