Some Project Fi customers seemingly receiving a Nexus 6 case, headphones, and external battery

Update: A tipster has sent an email confirming the existence of the “Welcome Kit”…

If you’re one of the lucky few who have received their invite to Project Fi, you’re probably also the kind of person that already owns a Nexus 6. If you don’t already have a Nexus 6 and you sign up for Fi though, Google makes you buy one—as it’s the only phone currently compatible with the service. According to a couple reports on Reddit, Google is giving these buyers some goodies…

It’s not clear who is receiving the bonus accessories—or why—but at least one buyer of the Nexus 6 through Project Fi says that Google sent a Project Fi-branded Nexus 6 case, a pair of headphones, and a 6,000 mAh external battery along with their order. Others on Reddit say, however, that they also purchased a Nexus 6 via the Mountain View company’s new MVNO and didn’t receive anything at all.

A lot of people have requested invites to Project Fi, and there’s no way to know who exactly is getting these “welcome kits”. And Google isn’t advertising this promotion at all, so you’re just playing roulette if you’re signing up to buy a Nexus 6 through Fi just to get some free stuff.
