AT&T LG G4 owners reporting that an OTA update was just pushed without permission

Update: AT&T has confirmed that they are the source of the update, but hasn’t said why it was pushed or what it contains.

According to several angry reports swirling around on Reddit, Twitter, and elsewhere, either AT&T or LG (or both?) seemingly just pushed a mysterious update to the LG G4 without asking permission. Some users even had their calls dropped while talking and saw their LG G4 reboot in front of their eyes, without a notification that this would happen or any dialog box asking permission…

It’s not clear yet why this update was pushed nor what changes it packs, but the update currently seems isolated to LG G4 devices on AT&T—meaning it was likely AT&T that pushed it out. Several users have reached out to customer support of both LG and AT&T, with both LG and AT&T reportedly saying that they don’t have the ability to push updates like this.

Although we don’t know what the update included, I would speculate to say that it was possibly an accident on AT&T’s part. Other carriers didn’t push the update (or at least haven’t done so yet without asking first), and it’s possible that someone could have pressed an emergency update button of sorts without intending to. We’ll update as we learn more.

We’ve reached out to both AT&T and LG for comment on the situation.
