OxygenOS 1.0.2 update released with Stagefright patch for OnePlus One users

OnePlus One users running OxygenOS can now download the security patches to deal with the Stagefright vulnerability. OnePlus One announced in a blog post this morning that Oxygen OS 1.0.2 is now available to download, and fixes what some dubbed the worst Android vulnerability in the mobile device era. Customers are advised to ensure they back up all their data before flashing. Those using OxygenOS already won’t need to reset their devices.

If you’re unfamiliar with flashing or haven’t yet installed OxygenOS on to your OnePlus One, the company has provided a detailed installation guide for both Windows and Mac users.

The Stagefright vulnerability within Android has seemingly been unchecked for a couple of  years, and only discovered quite recently. Since its discovery, Google and many of its manufacturer partners have been scrambling to get the hole patched up. And for good reason. Stagefright is particularly terrifying since it could potentially affect anyone receiving multimedia messages on their Android phone. Users wouldn’t even have to open the multimedia message for potential hackers to take control of their phone. Those with the ability and desire could take all your phone data, control the microphone, camera and a whole lot more.

Thankfully, we’re not aware yet of anyone trying to exploit the gaping hole left in Android’s armor, but the sooner software updates get rolled out, the better.
