ZTE announces ZMAX 2, coming to AT&T on September 25 for $150

In a press release published earlier today, ZTE  has announced that it’s releasing a second generation ZMAX. Unlike last year, this model isn’t going to be a T-Mobile device. Instead, the prepaid phone will be sold by AT&T and will go on sale for $149.99 on September 25.

Nothing about the spec sheet will get any tech fan’s heart beating, but the ZMAX 2’s feature list is competitive for a phone that costs less than $150. It has a 5.5-inch 720p display on the front, 4G LTE and a 3,000mAh removable battery. Although that may not be the highest capacity battery available in a smartphone, it should prove to offer fantastic performance in a device with a 720 x 1280 resolution screen. Other specs include 2GB RAM, 16GB storage (expandable via MicroSD), an 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing snapper. As for design, the Chinese OEM has seemingly given a new lease of life to the Band-Aid design from the Galaxy S5.

Interestingly, there’s no mention of which processor is powering the device. Last year’s model had a Snapdragon 400, and given the price and specs of the new model, it’d be surprising if it wasn’t either a Snapdragon 410 or 615 in the ZMAX 2.

The original ZMAX was one of T-Mobile’s best selling budget phones, although its time with the magenta carrier wasn’t completely plain sailing. TmoNews reported earlier this year that the network operator was forced to withdraw the device from its store shelves due to customers trying to pull out the non-removable battery. Perhaps also the reason ZTE went with a removable battery this year.

Time will tell if the ZMAX 2 will be as popular as its predecessor. Priced at the level it is, with the specs that it has, it should fly off the shelves as the holiday shopping season kicks off over the next couple of months.
