Specifications compared: Google’s Nexus 5X vs. Nexus 6P

For the first time ever, Google announced two brand new Nexus phones alongside each other at the same launch. The two devices are clearly different, from materials and design to specs and price, and each will appeal to different consumers. But will you go for the plastic-clad, smaller LG Nexus 5X or for the more premium Nexus 6P designed and manufactured by Huawei?

It may seem an obvious choice, but there are already differing opinions among the 9to5Google staff and — judging from the poll we published — our readers too…

To me, most of the benefits the Huawei Nexus has over the LG are obvious. They are what gives the device its rightful flagship status. A faster processor, more RAM and a higher resolution display aren’t out of place. The one thing that impresses me most is that both phones have exactly the same camera. They both use a 12.3MP Sony sensor with f/2.0 aperture and large pixels to give great low light images. What’s more, they can both shoot 4K video, and take bursts of photos which you can use for creating your own animated GIFs. or choosing the best image. Both also pack a USB Type-C connector and support Quick-Charge technology.

One other feature they both share (apart from the software) is the Nexus Imprint fingerprint recognition technology which Google claims can accurately recognize fingerprints at ridiculous speeds, and will keep getting better the more you use it.

Perhaps the most obvious difference is the design. While LG’s Nexus 5X uses a comfortable plastic shell, similar to the last Nexus 5. Huawei has gone with an elegant and beautiful all-metal design with diamond-cut edges. While the 6P is wider and taller, it’s amazingly still thinner than the less expensive LG-made Nexus.

Then we get to the all-important displays. It’s Quad HD versus Full HD, AMOLED vs. LCD, Gorilla Glass 4 vs. Gorilla Glass 3. In every way, the Huawei’s panel is a step up from LG’s. It’s sharper, bigger, more durable and will undoubtedly have more vivid colors and better contrast levels.

As a side note, if you really love good stereo sound from your phone, the Huawei is your only real option here. LG’s only has one loudspeaker, although there is consolation in the fact that it’s front facing, and not hidden on the back or bottom edge.

The most important thing for consumers is price. At $379, the Nexus 5X looks an absolute steal. As does the Huawei Nexus 6P at just $499. For reference, the most expensive Nexus 6P with 128GB storage is the same price ($649) as the least expensive iPhone 6s, and that says a lot. For a phone with this feature set and access to Google’s latest services, that’s a fantastic price. As a kicker, both new Nexii come with three months of Google Play Music for free and $50 Play Store credit.

You can pre-order the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P direct from Google, with delivery in 4-5 weeks.

EDIT: The spec chart mistakenly listed both Nexus phones with support for Quick Charge. That is incorrect and has been removed. Although the new Nexus phones charge really quickly using USB Type-C, they don’t use Qualcomm’s Quick-Charge technology.
