Periscope for Android updated with revamped Global Map, adds skipping in replays

Periscope has announced a couple of new features for its popular video-streaming app for Android, both of which will make watching and finding videos much more convenient and wide-ranging…

A big part of the update is the revamped Global Map. Instead of just showing who’s live on Periscope across the globe, the Global Map also now shows where there are replays to catch up on. Now, every time you zoom in to a specific area on the map, you’ll see any live broadcasts as well as any stream replays from the last 24 hours. Live videos are shown in red bubbles, replays in blue. It doesn’t matter which area of the world you want to zoom in on, it’ll show any broadcasts, past or present.

Periscope’s vision here is to let you see what’s going on in the world in real-time, whether that’s an amazing weather event, music concert, sports game or whatever.

As an added bonus, Periscope is making it much easier to get to the best parts of a video stream by introducing skipping ahead to replays:

We know you’re busy. When you’re watching a replay, you sometimes just want to fast forward a segment and get to the part you’re looking for. Or to the moment your friend told you about. Or you just want to seek through the whole thing quickly to get an idea of what happened. Now you can. Just press down while watching the replay, and drag left and right. You can even drag up and down to change the seek speed. And while you’re seeking, with your finger still pressed down, you’ll see a preview of that moment in the broadcast.

The app update is available on the Play Store now, and can be downloaded for free. It requires Android 4.4 or later and measures in at just 13MB in size.
