YouTube’s chief business officer Robert Kyncl took the stage today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to discuss the future of the video platform, its growth over recent years, and much more. Kyncl has been with YouTube since 2010, previously having a seven-year stint at Netflix. The executive oversees all business functions for YouTube, including sales, marketing, content, and general operations.

Speaking on stage at CES this evening, Kyncl used his time to discuss the growth of YouTube and the success stories the video platform has spawned. To best demonstrate this, Kyncl brought out Scooter Braun, best known as the person who initially discovered Justin Bieber in 2007 by finding one of his videos on YouTube. Braun explained how YouTube and his discovery of Bieber has affected his life and offered words of encouragement for people creating videos on the platform. “Don’t try to make content for millions of people,” Braun explained. “Make content that makes people feel.” Braun also explained that “video has never been more important to music” as it is right now, and explained that “It’s not about a billion impressions. It’s about one at a time.”
During his own time on stage, Kyncl explained that the growth YouTube has seen over recent years is extraordinary. “1 billion views used to be an outlier,” the YouTube exec said. “Now we see that engagement multiple times a year.” Kyncl also made the bold statement that by the end of the decade, digital video will overtake TV as the largest way people spend their free time.
“I believe digital video will overtake TV to become the single largest way people spend their free time before the end of the this decade. With YouTube being a major driver of that shift.”
That’s certainly a bold statement on Kyncl’s part, but one that has a very real possibility of turning out to be true. With YouTube growing and launching services like YouTube Red, Netflix and Hulu both growing and creating their own original content, digital video is becoming more and more common every day. Kycnl also commented that there are only two things people do more than watch video, and those are eat and sleep.
Kyncl also brought up GoPro’s Nick Woodman to announce that YouTube and GoPro are partnering to bring more 360 degree content to the video platform. GoPro says that it plans to release a more “casual” spherical capture camera soon, which will undoubtedly lead to more 360 degree content being created.
Finally, Kyncl also announced that YouTube will soon support HDR video. HDR is the technology that takes two videos or images and essentially merges them together to give the best lightning and quality possible.
