LG G5 packaging leak seemingly shows removable battery, bottom edge

While the Galaxy S7 has received almost all the pre-release attention, LG’s own upcoming flagship has seen its fair-share of Internet time. Most recently, an online listing showed up on a Dubai selling site, seemingly showing the all-metal device in full. In those images, it appeared as if the bottom edge was detachable, corroborating previous rumors that LG would be building in an innovative way to house a replaceable battery.

Today, on Chinese site Anzhuo (via NWE), an image of what appears to be some kind of retail packaging shows the detachable edge and battery together. Looking closely, it looks like the battery will fasten to the edge on the left side, and has two downward pointing arrows, presumably to indicate where to attach it. There also appears to be a couple of small catches on either side of the unit, which will undoubtedly be used to hold the bottom edge on to the phone.

It has been rumored that the detachable bottom edge is going to be used for more than just removing the battery. LG is also allegedly planning to build a physical camera controller which can be removed and attached to the phone and battery.

We’re unsure of the exact specifications of the G5, but we’re expecting a device with a screen smaller than 5.5-inches and with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (QHD). The dual camera on the back is rumored to be made up of a main 13-16MP sensor alongside a lower res 5MP snapper. Exactly what this dual camera setup is for is yet to be seen.  In previous examples, like HTC’s, it has been used to mess with focus points and add depth to photos.

We’d be incredibly surprised if the G5 wasn’t an all-metal device with all the latest hardware features, like a fingerprint sensor and USB Type C. It’s almost certainly going to launch with Android Marshmallow onboard too. LG will announce the G5 at a dedicated event in Barcelona on Sunday, Feb. 21.
