Update: The beta version of Remix OS 2.0 is now available to download from their site.
Remix OS 2.0 is a full desktop operating system that runs Android apps and is easy to install on Macs and PCs. Remix OS will be graduating into beta on March 1st and with it adds support for older computers with 32-bit processors, dual-booting, and OTA updates.
Adding support for 32-bit machines opens up compatibility with a wider variety of older computers that people would most likely want to install and play around with Remix OS on. Additionally, their installer now has support to dual-boot the OS for easier installation. Other features added to the beta are OTA updates, so that people will not have to wipe their current setup and data in order to receive the newest version.
The move from the alpha to the beta also fixes over 50 major bugs. Google has yet to approve Remix OS and as such Google Play services and the Play Store are not pre-installed. According to Jide, “Google [is taking] the time they need to test the new operating environment.” As Play services are needed by most apps to run, Jide offers instructions on how to sideload the right version on their site.
The beta version of Remix OS will be available to download from Jide’s site on March 1st. Remix OS was the first project we’ve seen this year that puts older computers to use. Last week, Neverware announced a way to install Chromium OS on any old computer.
