Podcasts reportedly coming to Google Play Music on April 18

Google announced in October that podcasts would be coming to Play Music. Since then, Google has been working with podcast networks and podcasters could begin adding their shows. According to NPR (via Android Police), Google will finally launch the feature on April 18th, this coming Monday.

The date comes via an NPR newsletter sent to subscribers and was supposed to remain under embargo till Monday. NPR has been working with Google to make sure public radio is represented in the new experience. The newsletter also reaffirms that podcasts will reside within the Play Music app, even if they aren’t technically music.

Since February, some users have reported seeing a new podcast section and listening functionality pop up in the current app. The podcast interface does not look too different from the existing app and will let users auto-download podcasts and receive notifications when a new episode comes out. There’s also a featured section within the app highlighting curated listening choices.

Play Music for Android will likely receive an update before Monday with the podcast functionality and a new app icon to match the recent colorful redesign. The web interface has already received a slight refresh featuring the new icon and a different shade of orange.
