Oppo’s line-leading R7s and R7 Plus to get almost stock Android experience this month with Project Spectrum

You may remember a few months ago, Oppo released Project Spectrum for its Find 7 handset. The idea was to remove some of what many of us find frustrating about ColorOS (Oppo’s custom Android skin), and make it much more like stock Android. While it retains some useful Oppo software tricks, it looks and feels a lot more like ‘regular’ Android.

The Chinese manufacturer has announced today that it is pushing out Project Spectrum to a couple of its newer phones. It’s available for the Oppo R7s immediately, and will be made available for the R7 Plus later this month.

Project Spectrum for the R7s combines all the advantages of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, including the battery-saving Doze Mode and Google Now on Tap, with some of ColorOS’ signature enhancements: customizable screen-off gestures (double tap to toggle wake/sleep modes, draw a circle to start the camera app, etc.), support for VOOC Flash Charge, OPPO’s phenomenal camera app, and more.

Previous devices to receive the Project Spectrum treatment include the Find 7, R5 and the R7g (available in Taiwan, Australia and Singapore). Meanwhile, a Marshmallow-based beta for the R7 Plus is set to be released on Friday, May 13.

For download instructions and links, head on over to Oppo’s community page where you can find a run down of the new features included in the latest Project Spectrum software.

For those of us who aren’t entirely enamored with Oppo’s own custom software, and iOS-likeness, Project Spectrum is a great option. In my recent review of Oppo’s F1 Plus, the software came under some serious scrutiny. Many of my complaints would be dealt with by a cleaner Android install.
