Google seeking self-driving vehicle operators for testing in Phoenix

Google today has posted a new job listing looking for “self-driving vehicle operators” in Phoenix, Arizona. The job listing says that the job would consist of riding around in a self-driving car for 6-8 hours per day, five days a week, monitoring the car’s performance and being prepared to take over should anything happen.

We are looking for vehicle safety specialists to be a part of the Google self-driving car project; responsible for operating a vehicle for six to eight hours per day collecting data for our engineering team. Develop a unique set of operational skills using vehicles running proprietary software and hardware. Operate comfortably in a fast-paced environment, sometimes managing up to four communication channels simultaneously via various high- and low-tech mediums. Work on cutting-edge technology and provide engineers with detailed, accurate feedback.

As noted by The Arizona Republic, the position would pay $20 per hour. Brian Torcellini, head of operations for Google’s Self-Driving Car testing program, explained that the best applicants would be Phoenix natives as they know the area, road, and driving norms the best.

Other qualifications include the ability to type 40 words-per-minute, a clean driving history, and a clean criminal history. The job would officially put you on the self-driving cars team at Google and Google notes that you would be asked to keep all project news to yourself.
