Marshmallow sees biggest jump yet in July Android distribution numbers

Finally passing 10% last month, Android Marshmallow continues to grow in this month’s distribution numbers. At 13.3%, the 8-month old operating system has yet to surpass any individual version of Lollipop or even KitKat. Hopefully, Android 7.0 Nougat will fare significantly better this time next year.

The 3.2 percentage point increase for Marshmallow over the last month is quite significant. Many phone variants finally received OTA updates in June. For Samsung, the AT&T Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+, and Galaxy S6 Active were updated, as was the Galaxy Tab E 8.0 on Verizon. Popular affordable phone maker Alcatel brought Marshmallow to the IDOL 3, as did Honor for the 5X. The latter update is quite notable for the improvement it brought to the Honor 5X.

All other versions are down, but Lollipop is still the most widely used version of Android at 35.1%. KitKat is at 30.1%, Jelly Bean at 17.8%, Ice Cream Sandwich at 1.7%, and Gingerbread at 1.9%. Froyo stubbornly remains at 0.1% and likely will never truly disappear. These numbers are compiled from Android devices that accessed the Play Store in a seven-day period ending on July 11.

With the fifth and final Nougat Developer Preview targeted for this month, Android 7.0 will soon make its way to the monthly the distribution numbers. With OEMs, like Sony, already getting a head start, hopefully manufactures will start Nougat updates by year’s end.
