Nest restructuring sees platform developers join Google’s Internet of Things team

Since the departure of founder Tony Fadell, new Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz has reiterated that the company was “not for sale” and released a new outdoor camera a few weeks later. Fortune, however, is now reporting that the company is again restructuring. The restructure will reportedly see the Nest platform team join Google proper.

The goal is to create a unified Internet of Things platform led by Android SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer. The longtime Google executive recently assumed control over the company’s “living room” efforts and products. This group will work on products like Google Home, which nears its fall release date.

Google has a number of disparate Internet of Things efforts including Brillo and Weave. The former is a stripped down version of Android that acts as an operating system for IoT devices, while Weave is a communication standard that allows for inter-device communication.

Meanwhile, the Alphabet subsidiary has its own “Works with Nest” developer program that uses Weave, but is not very unified with Google’s general IoT efforts. The program allows third-party IoT devices and services to communicate and integrate with Nest products specifically.

Fortune notes that it is unknown how many Nest employees are being moved to Google, but the restructuring should help the Alphabet company’s bottom line and focus them on being a hardware manufacturer.
