Wi-Fi Assistant now rolling out to all non-Project Fi Nexus devices

Just a couple of weeks ago Google revealed that a Project Fi exclusive feature would be making its way to all Nexus devices. Wi-Fi Assistant allows users to automatically connect to public Wi-Fi networks which Google has determined are fast and secure, even adding a layer of security through a VPN. Now that functionality is rolling out to all Nexus devices, Project Fi or not, in North America and Europe.

To access this feature on your device you will need to be running Android 5.1 Lollipop or higher and will need to update the Google Connectivity Services application. Once you’ve done that, head into your settings app, find the Google section, and look for the Networking option. Once there, you should see an option to enable Wi-Fi Assistant if a popup notification doesn’t show up first.

After you’ve turned the feature on, it will automatically connect to public Wi-Fi networks automatically. For the feature to connect to a public network, it will require that network to be completely open, meaning no password to connect and no password or confirmation to sign on.

The latest update to Google Connectivity Services, version D.1.5.10, is available now on Google Play.
