With the Pixel and Pixel XL, Google is making some bold claims on what these new phones can do, but it’s also really pushing the camera, claiming it’s the best found on any smartphone on the market. But what about the testing companies and real word use?

Both the Pixel and Pixel XL use the same 12.3MP rear camera, and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s a pretty impressive sensor. The sensor also uses large 1.55-micron pixels and an f/2.0 aperture, which means the camera is capable of letting in much more light and also taking shots quickly. Even better, HDR+ is instant.

DXOMark confirms how great this sensor is as well, giving the Pixel’s camera a rating of 89. That’s the highest rating ever given to a smartphone, surpassing Samsung’s current flagships by a single point, and passing Apple’s iPhone 7 (note, not the 7 Plus) by 3 points.

Better yet, the camera has improved software video stabilization that, based on Google’s demo, exceeds the stabilization most other smartphones do today.

With all of that said, let’s look at some samples. Everyone says a picture is worth a thousand words, so the gallery below should definitely give you a better idea of what this camera is capable of compared to the 170 or so I’ve had so far…

Keep in mind of course that the images above are not full resolution, so things may look a bit better when taken directly off of the phone. We should have a Pixel in for review within the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
