How to try Google Assistant on any rooted Android Nougat device now

Google Assistant is the biggest selling point of Google’s new Pixel devices, especially since it’s an exclusive. From what we’ve seen and tried with Assistant so far, Google has something impressive here, and now you can use it on any device with Android Nougat (via XDA).

Note: 9to5Google is not responsible for any issues with your device by following this tutorial.

To get going, the first prerequisite is to ensure you’re running a compatible version of the Google app. Any version past 6.5.35.21 will work, in our case we used version 6.6.14.21. Please do note that we’ve only tested this on the Nexus 6P, but it should work on any rooted device running Android Nougat.

Once you have that version installed, you’ll need to make some changes to your build.prop file. This will require that you are rooted. If you are, you’ll need to change your product model to Pixel XL and add a line as listed below.
ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
Once you’ve made these changes, save the file and reboot your device. Once you’ve rebooted, you’ll need to clear the data and cache on the Google app. After that, you should have Google Assistant. Simply long press the home button to try it out.

As mentioned, we’ve only tested this on the Nexus 6P, but it should work on any device running Nougat since there’s nothing tying it to the 6P. As long as you’re rooted, this should work. If you give it a shot on another device and it’s successful, leave a comment below and let us know! If it doesn’t work, you can of course still use Assistant in Allo.
