Sharp’s extremely Star Wars-themed phone for Japan has custom live wallpaper, apps, more

Sharp is especially known for their wildly designed phones. Their latest is a Japanese exclusive for SoftBank that’s tying into the upcoming release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The phone has competitive specs, but the main attraction is the deep Star Wars customized appearance and exclusive content.

Available in Light or Dark Side models that have corresponding blue/white and red/black polarized backplates that change color depending on the viewing angle. In addition to matching power buttons, there’s also the Imperial and Rebel logo at the bottom. Otherwise, they look a bit like the iPhone 7 with a larger camera and nearly identical front.

Both phones have a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage with microSD expansion. The 5.3-inch IGZO panel is only 1920 x 1080 with a 22.6MP rear facing camera. Meant for the Japanese market, the phone features a TV tuner and also happens to have IP58 water protection.

The phone is running a highly skinned version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Users will immediately notice the live wallpaper that puts you in either an X-Wing or TIE Fighter cockpit. The spacecrafts also act as the actual home button. Various apps including the weather, calendar, and clock are skinned, with the latter featuring custom ringtones and sounds to go with Star Wars emoji.

There are a number of regular static wallpapers from the original trilogy. An interesting movie player app provides unlimited viewing to Star Wars: The Force Awakens until December 2019. There is also a game with exclusive content, as well as metal figures that are included in the box.

The phone goes on sale December 2 for 97,920 Yen or $868. Presumably, such features like the live wallpaper and custom apps can be sideloaded to other phones, but the other content is region locked to Japan.
