Motorola makes clear that Moto Mods are here to stay, so prepare for a lot of them

If you’re a recent Motorola customer, and in particular a happy one, chances are that today’s news will make you even happier. If you snagged one of the firm’s latest devices in their new Z line, you’ll be satisfied to hear that commitment to the Moto Mods program has been bolstered fully…

According to CNET, the Lenovo subsidiary has said that it will work on no less than twelve new Mods per year. And, come 2017, we may indeed see even more of them, as the company is planning to launch an Indiegogo campaign to boost interest amid smaller developers, whose ideas will be evaluated and then eventually prized with a Mods kit.

There’s no doubt that the idea of a modular phone is an enticing one, and one that’s being played with by a number of manufacturers, albeit with various degrees of (un)success. LG, for one, tried to enhance its G5 with its so-called “Friends”, while Google‘s ambitious Project Ara was simply aiming too high not to be axed entirely.

But that hasn’t stopped Motorola to double down on its efforts. After all, considering that these Mods are by their very nature part of an ecosystem lock in, to carry the plan forward Lenovo would have had to think it this way from the get go, and it’s great to see that the idea is indeed going to be taken a step further.

There’s not much information regarding the kind of Mods we’ll see, but cameras are apparently high in the list. Of course the system’s flexibility has the potential to make all sorts of Mods possible, and we’d certainly be glad to see them succeed. Hopefully consumers will think the same.
